I recently went to Goa for work, (arbitration case, go figure!!) and as I used to rave, I was interested in what Goa had to offer since it started off "goan trance" and had quite a vivid party scene back in the day!!
We stayed in Casa De Goa, which is not your 5 star hotel. There are plenty of those around, but they are costly and well, you don't get the real feel of Goa!! This is a local hotel i believe, there were lots of Indian's staying there when we were there. But, we got great Indian food, Great goan food (sort of has a portuguesey/ spanishy twist to it) and it was cheap!! and the hotel layout was pretty interesting, the insides were decorated to look like you were outside on a street corner in portugal somewhere!! Fantastic!!
The hotel staff were extremely courteous, and friendly and very helpful. It is close enough to the main areas, and everywhere is easily accessible by cab or bus.

Here is the website. Don't expect 5 starred luxury, but if you want a local experience, this is the place to be. Goan people are friendly, relaxed and know how to enjoy life. A great little place to visit!! I would recommend going beach side durin the daytime, as that's where they have lots of little shops and trinket stores etc.
Things there are generally very cheap.

If you love the beach, then Goa is for you! I would suggest getting down at Madgaon station which is lovely (the city is about the most disgusting city I've ever seen) and catching an auto to Benaulim beach. It is super quiet there and so relaxing. Go to Palm Grove Cottages, they are super charming apartments in a palm grove. Make sure you eat at Malibu restaurant. If you like a bit of a night life, check out Colva Beach. There's tons of restaurants and shops there, you're sure to enjoy.

One thing about Goa is that it's super, super hot! I think peak season is December to February, it should be nice during those times. Prepare to sweat though if you're going outside of those times. The Spice Farm is a nice day out. I haven't been to Nothern Goa but I've heard that all the 5 star resorts are in South Goa. Depends what you're looking for I guess.

If you are visiting GOA first time then ideal would be stay in GOA for 3 to 4 days.

Go to tour operator in Panjim or any other cities in goa they conduct one day tour to North GOA/ South GOA. Then after words you can give more time to places which you will like most. Also if you are Indian carry your driving license so that you can hire vehicle to roam around.

Some places to visit:

Beaches: North Goa: Armbol, Madre, Ashwe ,Morji, Anjuna Vagator, Calangute Baga, COCO,

South GOA: Palolem, Colva

One day you can roam in OLD GOA Visiting two churches also Margaon, Panjim, Vasco-De-gama .

About staying in GOA many options are available. It would be better if you use google search engine to search staying options in GOA.
