I am a Latina and I am curious on this issue. If a member of a particular minority group says something remotely racist (i.e. joke, etc.) it is taken differently than if a white person says the exact same thing. If a white person makes a non-offensive innocent race joke, it's usually not as welcomed than as if a hispanic or black would say it.

Do you feel as if your walking on egg shells? I know I would.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or I hang out with the right people, but I don't get this at all. Of course, I'm not inclined to make "jokes" about race, innocently or otherwise.

(*laughter*) And I'm very blunt. If I don't like someone, they know exactly why it is, and race is never the reason.

Nope. I don't think there is any such thing as a harmless race joke.
If someone of that race wants to tell those to one another, that is a different thing because THEY haven't been the ones oppressing their group for hundreds of years.
Think of it like a stupid woman bashing sexist joke. If you heard some guys saying it, it would naturally make you question that they had a decent respect for women, because there really are still a number of sexist men out there who think we are less intelligent than men are.
Same thing with the race jokes. Some wounds are still too tender and we whites are fools if we think everything is all fine and dandy now; we can all roll over and go back to sleep.
Even if they are not practicing racism themselves, they can rest assured that somebody else still is and the folks of different races they pass on the street are well aware of that fact.

I walk on eggshells everyday, I live in Southern California and I am white (whites are minorities here, and that is just the registered voters, not to count the illegals that make up even more of the population). I will meet someone and they automatically assume I'm racist because they ask: "so, do you hate (hispanics) or not?" Kid you not. I try to politely tell them that my ex husband is hispanic and that my children are of that race also. They seem to shrug me off though as if to say, oh well, at least my prejudices don't work with this one....I am white and the women I meet at my son's school will have him over, but when they meet me and realize that I am fair skinned, the kids seem to stop playing with my son. I know that he does not speak Spanish, nor do I, but it just seems too much of a coincidence for school aged kids to get that sort of idea to stop playing with someone.

I am so sick of being a "majority" because I am so discriminated against here. I cannot get a job at some stores because I do not speak Spanish, but affirmative action makes it mandatory for someone who does. Is this Tiajuana or the US? I am not racist and I respect those people who immigrate here, like my ex husband who now thrives as a DA assistant in San Diego and provide an useful service and tax money to support the roads they drive on everyday. But I am so sick of being an outsider because I am white and the attitude that because of this, I HAVE to be racist because of my blonde hair.

Through all these years black people suffered from white. But i believe these stuff belong to the past. The bad thing is that some black people think that nothing is over and there is some kind of conspiracy against them. I'm a white guy and i said i like Lynyrd Skynyrd(southern US band)everybody told me that i was a racist.Hello!!!I only like their music. And that's not feel good.Besides the band is not racist. They accused as racists for their home.In some occasions white man must hide what like or dislike. These stuff must end. There are no differences...

No I could care less about the double standards created by ignorant people,if I have something to say I say it and dont think twice if someone has a problem with it,everyone is racist to an extent but as long as your not hurtful or abusive that is just a stance that you have and nothing more and to the people that have a problem with it "OH WELL"

I stay away from all racist terms etc and, yes, I do find it very ironic that it is okay for black men to call each other n*gg*r
in the media, whether it is music, movies or tv. But don't let anyone else do it eg the guy from Seinfeld. Talk about hypocrisy.

At first I was shocked or taken aback since I've never had a prejudiced bone in my body but now I just ignore it or discuss it dispassionately. Eggs are not a part of my diet.
