I've read almost all his book (with the exception of Bloodline) and I don't think most of his book take place in hospitals. There were a few that did, but not all of them.

I don't think he worked in a hospital, he was in the military and also did worked on Broadway plays as well as television program. You can look up his biography on Wikipedia.

Sheldon's career began in 1937 in Hollywood, California, where he reviewed scripts and collaborated on a number of B-movies. After a stint in the military during World War II as a pilot in the War Training Service, a branch of the Army Air Corps, Sheldon returned to civilian life and began writing musicals for the Broadway stage while continuing to write screenplays for both MGM Studios and Paramount Pictures.

He struggled with bipolar disorder for years; he nearly committed suicide at 17.
