Are you talking full shade or part shade?
Various Arisaema (or Jack-In-The- Pulpit) will grow in full shade, as will Cimicifuga (Bugbane), Corydalis, any number of ferns, & most Hostas.
Part shade lovers are most all of the above as well as: Astilbe, Columbine, Bleeding Heart, Heuchera (Coral Bells), Helleborus (Lenten Rose), or Pulminaria

Try Hostas, there are several varieties of these big leafy plants and they have a nice little flower for a short time once a year

Hostas are nice, throw in some ferns and bleeding hearts, maybe some astilbe , lilies, impatiens will often reseed themselves, liriope is a good groundcover but can be invasive.

Impatiens are great because they are native to Hawaii and can stand a hot humid climate. They do very well in the shade.
