We could say there are an infinite number.
However, Newton chose the number seven because, as a keen Bible student, he recognized that seven pictures heavenly perfection. It seemed obvious to him that the Creator would produce a rainbow with the seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Everyone says seven (or eight) but this is not correct in a scientific sense. A rainbow splits white light into the colors of the visible spectrum. The color depends upon the wavelength of the light and the wavelength varies in smoothly across the rainbow. So, technically, the red to red-orange portion for example would not simply be red and red-orange it would include a huge number of variations of the two.

This may sound nit picky but you DID ask this in a Science and Mathematics Section of YA. So, this is the only correct answer from a scientific standpoint. Sorry, to all you "seven or eight" folks who answered this. You are not correct.

We are taught the seven major colours in school. This is useful to get the general order correct. However, the spectrum is a continuous blending of these seven colours. There are an infinite number of "colours" because in between any two colours there is another colour.

The human eye is not very sensitive to colour so we can only distinguish a few dozen of these.
