Sensations are a raw mechanism that allows us to see, hear, feel (touch), smell or taste things that sorround us. Perception is how we interpret what we see, hear, smell etc. Perception is what makes us understand the sensations and integrate them into our psyche.

We can sense everything in the environment, light, colors, shapes, smells etc., and all this information is sent to our brain. If we would become conscious of every little detail that sorrounds us, our brain would be overwhelmed. Perception makes the selection and chooses the relevant sensations to be processed and turned into perceptions.

Perception also has some characteristics which help us save a lot of time. For example, if you see a person on the street, far away, you will be able to guess how tall that person is, even though they appear very small from that distance. Sensations allow us to see the person, but perception makes us realize that it's a human being, and it also gives us extra information about their height for example. If we were unable to store previous perceptions, we would see that person as very small when far, and growing in size as we get closer (which would confuse us a lot!)

Hope my answer was clear enough.

A simple Example :

Those who danced were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music. I hear the music do you.

- Sensation : hearing the music / dancing to the music
- Perception : Thinking that those who danced were Insane just because they could not hear the music

perception is higher level & happens in the brain

Your eyes sense a bunch of squiggly things, your mind percieves written words.
