People have no patience anymore.

Women have more financial independence, as in old days they had to put up with a man no matter how bad he was because of lack of money.

Morals are not what they used to be, back in the day most women had sex for the first time when they got married, today good luck finding a virgin to marry. What this those to both men and women is that they get used to having sex with multiple partners and when they get married it becomes very hard for them to have sex with just one person and when they get caught all hell breaks loose.

Most important:

In the old days people died young, you could find a 40 year old woman who had burried 3 husbands or vice versa, you could find men who had lost a bunch of wives to sickness or childbirth.
Up to early 1900s the life expectancy around the world varied from 25-35 depending on the country, so many people kept losing their life spouses left and right and they weren't together for a long time for the marriage to become absolutely boring.

No, marriage has not become a joke. It still is a great institution to a lot of folks. I've been married for 16 years now and sure love the experience.
Too many movies and chat shows seem to 'glorify' divorce and separation. Many marriage counsellors (who couldn't make a success of theirs) also tend to encourage separation for the flimsiest of excuses - but I suspect is just a cover for their inability to keep theirs.
Quite unfortunately, this is a world of TV, movies, gizmos and quick fixes and my generation (baby boomers) appear to be failing in imparting the family values handed down to us by our progenitors - AND MAINLY BECAUSE WE THREW GOD OUT OF OUR LIVES and have encouraged hero worship, individualism, impatience and unqualified (though certificated) counsellors as role models.

But then, hope is not lost. Don't be a joke. Endeavour to make a success out of your own marriage and always seek counsel from couples who've been at it for a long time and are making a success out of their marriage. Avoid multi divorced counsellors or talkshow hosts/hostesses whose brains are most probably between their legs all the time - who believe that having tons of money qualifies them to advise on such a beautiful institution as marriage.

God bless you and be cool

in my opinion it is because people don't take their vows seriously.
I know people that talk about the divorce before they even get to the "I Do" others try to change their partners or expect them to change after the marriage. The only thing I can say is marriage is hard work it is like raising children it is a job that needs work 24/7 and as longs as both are committed to each other and willing to listen and compromise and stick out the hard times marriage can work if you try hard.

Loss of morals and values on a national level. Divorce is as common as marriage. Society has been taught to take the easiest fix to their problems, like all of the drugs on the market. Got a problem, just run from it. It's really quite sad.

Is it a joke? I don't think so. It's a way of life for me and my husband. We've been married for nearly 20 years and very happily. Most of friends are married and are reaching the same milestones we are arriving at. There are a few divorces, but for those of us who take it seriously, we wouldn't want it any differently.

it isn't a joke to those that actually listen to the vows they take... and if you mean the jokes comedians tell then it shows that it is actually an important matter to them and their audience... also i think it has become acceptable to complain about the wife or husband even if one really loves them and has a wonderful marriage... as for those not married... maybe they are poking fun out of jealousy...

people like the idea of a beautiful wedding, buying a house in the suburbs, but the reality of living together in that house is another story. it's hard to really trust people, even those closest to you. so many affairs, addictions. the idea of marriage might sound great but the day to day struggles makes it tempting to walk away from those vows.

Has it? I don't think so. Are you just fishing for religous people and fools to say something like, "feminism, freedom to divorce and homosexuality" 'cause if you are, you shouldn't be.

lack of god in the marriage, too many expectations, lack of morals, selfishness, and too many people out there willing to be with the married person even though they are married.
