If you have a valid credit or debit card that you can use on ATM machinse in the US, that same card will work at ATM's in Europe as well. They'll give you cash directly out of those machines in Euros at a very competitive exchange rate, much better than at the Money Exchange places at the airports or on the street. Your account will be charged in American dollars at those good exchange rates.
Since you'll be carrying at least one credit/debit card with you anyway, why bother carrying a lot of cash or traveler's checks? If it'd make you feel better, change a small amount for pocket money at your bank ($50 -$100) to Euros and cash as you go while in Europe at ATM's there.

you shouldn't exchange in the states. our exchange rate changes only once a week while in europe it changes every day. thus giving you more money usually for the amount you exchange. i recently went to amsterdam and berlin and got a good rate over there and exchanged the rest i had left when i got back to the states and got more money back. wait till you get there, there are plenty of exchanges.

Go to the bank or an currency exchange place. If you need help finding them check the internet. You can always do it once you get there or sometimes at the airport.

Go to your bank. If they can't (I couldn't imagine why though) then do it at the airport (at the currency exchange). The bank is generally better because they traditionally give a better exchange rate. A usefull idea is to use travellers cheques. They are safe. If you lose them, go to a bank and they will be replaced.

When you get the Europe you can go to a bank, or try the airport some US airports that have exchanges...but most likely when you get to Europe its alot easier to do it there.
