How can it make things better?
Here are just a few ways.
If you are not married, you have no say in medical care or the right to be there when your partner is sick. If an emergency arises, a hospital has the right to refuse to allow you anywhere near your partner and does not have to abide by your wishes. Even with a medical power of attorney, the hospital still can refuse.
There is no such thing as comunity property in a same sex relationship. If you own a house together and something happens to one of you, the other's family has the right to have you removed from the property.
Married couples have the priviledge of filing joint tax returns and getting certain tax breaks that same sex couples do not have.
Family medical insurance is not offered to same sex couples in many areas. Some companies now offer domestic partnership insurances, but most people have to pay twice as much for health insurance. My partner's employer offers domestic partner insurance but my insurance is better so I have my insurance for me and my children and she pays for her insurance because I cannot put her on my policy. We could save thousands of dollars a year if this was changed.
These are just a few ways that life could be better.

you must have never had the person you love in the ER and they tell you that you have no right to be there. Or that you have no rights in the life you have lived with them
For me it will make sure that the woman I have been with for almost 4 years can have someone there when she needs then and when I need her.
No one has the right to take our lives from us. ...ever

How does heterosexual marriage improve quality of life? It's a physical, emotional, and mental bind to that one person for the rest of your life. it's Nice to be able to proclaim to one person you want them and only them, and you prove that with marriage.
