In the movie, humans were fed false sensory input. They were made to believe they were living in a real world, because they could feel it, touch it, see it, etc. In addition, they interacted because they were all networked together.
The theory is fine. All we need is the science to plug into the right parts of the brain to feed in sensory data. Then you just need the creativity to build a believable world. I'd say, by 2050 you'll be able to buy a virtual vacation just like in Total Recall. Maybe twenty years after that, some people might want to live in fake worlds.
