There is no difference in quality between the PS2 and a DVD player, however the remote comes seperately with the PS2 and it uses a controller slot.

Edit: I have been using my PS2 as my primary DVD player for two years and have had no problem.

Well I would really be waiting for the PS3 as it has the better Blueray player and you can play PS3, PS2 and PS1 games on it too. (Blueray is like a DVD player but is so much advanced and better). But if you don't have $700-$1000 or more than I suggest to buy a PS2 to play PS2 and PS1 games and to watch DVD's. I got a PS2 in 2003 and it still has been a good DVD player and gaming console. So like any smart person who want a Blueray player, they would buy a PS3 because you can play PS3, PS2 and PS1 games, you can watch DVD's in better screen, colour ect., and it is very cheaper to buy a PS3 (Bluerays cost $1200-$2000). The same thing appiles to a PS2 only you can only play PS2 and PS1 games and you don't get the upgraded Blueray, you get an original DVD player.

buy purchasing the ps2, you will be getting 2 entertainment units in one. we have been using our ps2 for as long as it has been out for both dvd's and games. actually it's more like 3 in 1 becauses you can also play most of the classic ps1 games on it.
i have had only 1 instance where a dvd would not boot up. it was bought on e-bay from a shady seller who said new in original box and turned out she made bootlegs. so there are some movies that might not boot.

well, its better to play dvds on a dvd player then a ps2 cuz it can give the ps2 a shorter life span.

have you ever checked the internet these days? PS3 has a butt-load of video games popping out in the subsequent year. and that they are video games that are going blow different video games out of the water. so some distance as blue-ray is going, why in the international could PS3 end making video games on it? They very own the format. They created it so i will quite a lot assure that they do no longer seem to be going to end using it. And in case you evaluate the two formats you will see that hd-dvd would not even come close to to blue-ray. i think of that's totally risk-free to purchase a PS3.
