a catamaran is neither a boat nor a ship. it is just two logs tied together to make a platform which floats on the water. the name comes from the tamil words "kattu maram" meaning "tie log".this word has morphed into catamaran in english.(like the mulgitawny soup, which again is a tamil word 'mulagau thanni" meaning pepper water)..
