You won't get high from it, but it will make you fail a drug screen.

opium is taken from the seed pod of the poppy, they make slashes in the pod while it is still green, and the plant oozes out a resin to seal the cuts, that resin is raw opium. But yes, there is opium in poppy seeds as well, just not as much.
If he is that desperate to get high he ought to consider getting religion, or trying a twelve step program.
There is also a trace amount of opium in just about everything that is green and leafy. Lettuce, for instance. Grass, and since cows and goats eat the grass, milk has traces of opium in it.
Since most of the Opium produced in the world is actually legal, and used in synthesizing morphine, codeine, demerol and similar pain medications, there are lots of leftover seeds. They are baked so they won't grow, but, yeah, they are the same plant.
I have to add, though, that boiling seeds to get opium is kind of ridiculous.
Just go to a doctor, (some of whom are legalized dope dealers) and get a prescription. Break your own arm before going to make it more convincing.
Or just go straight, which is a much better way of doing things.
By the way, poppy seeds will make you test positive for opiates on a dope test.
If you eat poppy seed rolls, and don't actually use opiates, but test positive for it, demand a recount, actually a spectro-analysis. Not a good idea if you actually do dope though, it would be testifying against yourself and paying for the "privilege" of doing so.
Summation: yes it does have the opium, and yes, he is still wrong for doing something really damned stupid.

Yes, the type of poppy seeds you find in your local grocery store are the same poppy seeds that grow into opium poppy plants. The species is Papaver somniferum. Most brands of poppy seeds are not washed, as professional chefs prefer unwashed seeds for their more complex flavor. What's on those unwashed seeds? You guessed it, opium!
Depending on the variety, 1/4lb to 2lbs of unwashed poppy seeds soaked in hot water with a little lemon juice will produce a strong dose of opium tea.

That stuff never works. When I was in high school, everyone use to buy marigold seeds, boil them and try to make a tea that makes you hallucinate and start tripping. Everyone I know that tried that just puked for awhile, probably because they were covered in some sort of chemical since they were bought in a hardware store. The other thing every one tries to do is get 'high' off of nutmeg because it's mentioned in the book 'Malcolm X'. Our old English teacher even told us that he knew we were all going to go home and try it. It never worked for anyone I know.

A poppy seed is a poppy-there is only one variety. I don't know if you could actually get stoned by brewing in a tea; but I would take a chance and say yes you could. I know if you were to eat a poppy seed encrusted roll, you will test positive for maijuana the next day.

Different kind of poppies and the opium is derived from the sap of the seed pod. The seeds themselves will not get you stoned.

No, that's nonsense. Opiates are made from other parts of the poppy, the seeds are non-toxic. More info here: http://www.google.com/search?q=opiates
