Being able to spell simple words like "skill", and if they can't, the ability to use a spell checker.

Generally a Computer Operator should posses minimum 30 Words per minute typing speed and Working Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office.
Being good at English Communication is always a plus for anybody.

Atleast you should know the OS(operating system) like WINDOWS XP and some other softwares like MS Word, Excel.

Not sure exactly what you mean, usually if its a computer operator job its some data entry position.
