Do such unbelievably weird things? I read about geniuses like Goethe who wouldn't write unless he had a rotting apple in his desk, or Dickinson who shut herself up in her house for what, ten years? Or the hysterical fits and screaming and crying of Mozart when he'd compose....why?

Because they see, experience and relate to the world and the people in it in diverse ways. This does not mean they are better than the mundanes it just means they are different and like you they are simply trying to find their way

Not as a generalization, but historically, many brilliant minds are also dealing with their personal demons. Some are bi-polar, some schizophrenic, some OCD. Also, for some, having the genius IQ does not mean they have a high person IQ (they find it very difficult to deal with the general public. My father had a genius level IQ but could not deal with people.

As with most people, some of the actions are 'routines'. Perhaps the first time Goethe came up with an idea, he ate a rotten apple and from then did the act of having the rotten apple at his desk (like a superstition).

Finally, some are savants. With savants, they can produce some amazing things with their minds, but there is a short circuit for other things. You can find that with autistic people as well.

Otherwise, maybe they are just eccentric or strange.

Well, i know someone who is a brainy gal who is very creative quite personally. :o) She tends to be quite normal for the most part. I have a few little quirks. I also have an intolerance for certain types of ignorance (mainly social issues),and a frustration due to the fact that not everyone can always understand where i am coming from. I also have this ability to laugh at everything in life, because i see everything for what it is. Some find my ability to laugh at serious issues odd...but most people find it very refreshing, once they get use to it. You will probably find that most highly intelligent people will not admit their intelligence. They know it, but it is a sour subject with them. They find it very hard to feel normal and are often made fun of as children.
I believe that the behaviors you described came from mental illnesses not from their intelligence.

One of the ways to get into a brilliantly creative state is to create an anchor to that state, something auditory, visual or physical that brings the state crashing back.

The apple for instance, acts as a visual cue. See apple - go into creative state. The rituals that many athletes have are quite similar - kiss boots & do a twirl before entering the arena - this is a physical cue to get into the creative state needed to win games.

The other thing to consider of course, is that the line between genius and madness is very fine indeed...

Actually, our brilliant/intelligent mind is useless unless we have wisdom with us.
Wisdom tells us the right way, our intelligence may miss guide us if we act without wisdom.
Wisdom is meant for practicality of our knowledge and gives ways to utilize our resources in the most best, suitable and appropriate way.
We may have unlimited resources, but our wisdom fixes certain limits to choose right or wrong use of our powers or energies.
Wisdom is like a dam for flooded water.
So the over intelligence is useless without wisdom.

Well, your mainly talking about creative geniuses. Most creative geniuses have a skewed interpretation of the world. They're usually pretty fragile people. I think maybe they are mentally ill (to a small extent) and this illiness and the weirdness that comes along with it, gives them a view of the world that is sort of beautiful.

One does not need the other to have happened....but some are so deeply intelligent, on levels that most will never understand, and quite possibly these were the things that would happen because of the different world they live in...

We tend to lack common sense and social skills because our brain power is being sucked up by the few areas we're particularly brilliant/intelligent in.

Yes. They do because they use most of their brain for doing things that we think are difficult or think that require high intelligence levels. They need to do something different from the routine to energize the sleeping brain cells and the brain does it automatically.

So, they ignore small things. Hence you term them as absent-minded. They look absent-minded for us because they don't bother about the things you and I bother. They bother about the things that we can't dare to bother.
