A A Milne the author of Winnie the Pooh was born in Scotland. He had a son Christopher (Christopher Robin). Christopher had stuffed toys one of which was a stuffed bear named Winnie. The bear was named Winnie(Winnipeg,Canada) after a bear that had been donated to the London Zoo by the Royal Canadian Rifles. The Canadian Black Bear had been it's mascot during the war.

Christopher Milne had named his toy after Winnipeg, a bear which he and his father often saw at London Zoo, and "Pooh," a swan they had met while on holiday. The bear, called "Winnie," was known as a gentle bear who never attacked anyone, and she was much loved for her playfulness. This is exactly what inspired Milne to write about Pooh Bear.[2] Pooh the swan appears as a character in its own right in "When We Were Very Young."

I don`t know but this bear looks just like one of my friends!
But I think "Pooh" means something like "Alexander the Great", they didn`t want to leave it just Winnie, so they decided to put something afterwards to make it more intresting!
