My husband is a gambler and went to the casino and wrote some checks. I didn't know he did and closed the bank account. Because I work there, can they fire me? The bank didn't loose any money because the account was closed.

He knew at the time he wrote the checks, no we didn't have enough to cover them; however, I didn't know that when I closed the account. When he didn't come home because he was gambling, I started getting suspicious and noticed the check book missing. When he came home, I was so mad I didn't talk to him and the following morning closed the account. If anyone was in the position I was, would they have a clear mind and do the "right" thing, whatever that may have been in this case?

He didn't "steal" it because he was on the account... Besides, I did not know he was the one that took it because we had our carpet cleaned that day, so the cleaners could have taken it for all I know...

Yes. You are a risk to the bank and they are just "protecting their interest". When you got hired for the job, the bank did a lot of background to see if you owe any money and if you have any criminal record. They do this so that they know your not in financial difficulty and will not be temped to steal from the company. If your husband have a problem gambling, he will find a way, in their opinion, to have you steal from the company.

Long story short, yes then can.

I don't see how they could legally fire you, especially when you caused no harm to your work, the property, or the employees. Now if they try to or they do, I would contact a lawyer and see what they say. Now on the other hand, did your husband write checks that he knew were going to bounce? Either way they can not terminate you for something your husband did. Hope this helps..

Some states allow employers to terminate employment with no reason at all, so it partly depends on what state you work in. But my guess is that the bank could look at you closing the account with uncleared checks as potential fraud. That would give them cause for letting you go whether they need it or not.

I dont know if they can fire you but they may question what happen. Depending how long you have worked there and how well they know you, you might be ok if they realize that you are a honest person who would never do such a thing and that it was an honest accident.

If he didn't write bad checks on the account you have with him, then no. They shouldn't be able to fire you if your account with them is closed. I know it's scary for you though. Hope it works out.

they can't fire you just b/c he's a gambler...I have a feeling that you're leaving out some of the facts...give us the whole story if you want help.

Now you're all over the place...i can't help you- don't know what you're talking about. try not to write in a way that assumes we've heard the story before...later & good luck!

Aren't there procedures regarding processing your own accounts or those of your family/friends? I don't know if you can process your own transactions. And another question would be, is the account in both of your names?

no I'm sure they won't fire you
just a few bounced cheques but in the future I would have my bank account in my name only

Unless you've got a contract they can fire you for any reason that doesn't violate a law.

Doubt it. It was a mistake. Might give you a finger wag though...
