I am a master carpenter. I have a table saw, now I bought a nice router 185.00 with my Christmas & birthday cash. But I feel guilty cause I really don't have to have it. it would be something I can make cool things with. also I don't know how often I'll use it realistically.
takes time and $ for wood etc. I thought of saving the $ to maybe put it towards a new TV or something more sensible. I couldn't pass up the deal because it has a $30.00 rebate which makes it a good deal. Ever since I quit drinking 12 years ago, decisions seem a lot harder. I don't know why.

By master I just meant I am darn good. 35 years
in construction business. and the router was for a toy to make things when I wanted. you don't need a router to build a house! and who said it was my 1st one? my 1st one is older than some of you clowns that answered rudely, then disappeared. master is a figure of speach. did you ever hear of a master Doctor? no, they are practicing. there is always something to learn from someone, so lighten up. If you need advice or questions I would be happy to help. I know I or no one is a master, because things change all the time. so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
I am disapointed at some of the accusations made towards me and cocky remarks. also happy for the polite answers.

I feel guilty about buying stuff for myself too. Think of it this way, you got a good deal and on it and I'm sure you'll put it to good use. Now if you were just going to let it sit and collect dust, then that is another story. If it is going to put a strain on your budget though, maybe you should take it back and save up for it. If not, then just enjoy it and don't feel guilty!

You said this router was a good deal. Even though you "don't have to have it" as a carpenter you know it will probably make your job a lot easier with having a quality tool to use. I think you had something in mind to create when you picked this as to what to buy, as I have personaly spent hundreds of dollars on woodworking equipment that I didn't have to have. In the long term you will probably find that you will be glad you got the router. I'm still yet to really use the Miter saw that I bought over a year ago. It was a good deal and I didn't want to pass it up. I know that if I use that saw, and use my husbands router, I can at least make nice custom wood picture frames, which if I need to, I can also sell. Maybe you had something like that in mind, since you would not have saved birthday and christmas cash just to spend on something you didn't want for some good reason. If your really worried about the cost, set it up and make items to sell to get the cost back, and buy something else you want also.

Any tool is more useful than a TV even if there is not a lot of use. You will be able to make cool things out of packing cases so the wood won't cost that much also you may be able to buy used furniture and improve the design with this tool. Alcohol abuse can and does damage some of our makeup but cheer up some people never quit so their is hope for you yet and look at how much money you have saved

Wayne congrats on 12 years. I hit 21 the 6th of January.

I've bought a lot of tools over the past few years as well. Would like to trade my Craftsman Table Saw for a Jet, Freud.. Good tools cost good money. Bosch makes foor stuff.

I don't act as impulsively as I did 21 years ago but part of that is just gittin' old.

I don't think you know what a master carpenter really is.If you were a master carpenter you would of already owned at least 1 router to make "cool things" with. Master carpenters make very good money,so buying some wood wouldn't be a concern plus you get tons of wood off of job sites.
Maybe you should return the router and put the money towards a new TV so you can watch all those DIY shows and dream about the "cool things" you could build IF you were a MASTER CARPENTER

It sounds like a bit of a bargin so dont feel guilty enjoy it.
If you feel really bad you could use it to make stuff with to sell and buy your telly from the profit. Good Luck to you make

Dude,
If it is not something that you need for something you are doing right now, or something you see yourself getting a lot of use out of, save your money. If you had lots of spare money sitting around, I'd say great buy the tools, toys, or equipment you want but you said this is all of your xmas and birthday cash. (You never know when you might need that money, such as for a car repair or something.) Go ahead, spend some of the money on something fun, but I suggest putting some of it away for later.

If it's (the router) something you can wait for, I suggest shopping garage sales, or craigslist, or ebay, and buying one that is used. You'll save a lot of money, and most likely will do exactly what you need/want it to. It's funny I've seen a number of router's at garage sales and my ex bought one once, it worked great, and did exactly what he needed it to (He's a carpenter himself.) I've seen lots of tools and construction items at garage sales.

You should put the router where the TV would go... if it is still there in it's box, untouched in 15 days, go take it back, buy the TV and waste your life watching someone else accomplish something.

The thought of a TV over a creation device is just unreal to me... If I were you I would have already shaved and shaped every sharp corner in my house that wouldn't ruin the router...

better to express your talents with wood than to burn out on TV . If where you live there are companies like farm equipment or even some home improvment stores . look out back for the skids and pallets that equipment is shipped on . I have found everything from mahogony to red oak . routers are great fun when you discover there uses
