NOT FLAMABLE GAS. THOSE ARE THERE TO RELEASE ANY AIR FROM THE SYSTEM. IF AIR POCKETS BUILD UP, IT STOPS OR REDUCES THE CIRCULATION OF HOT WATER.

I thought that was steam that was escaping from the radiators

You better hope there isn't any flammable gas in your system... If there is than I wouldn't want to be around that house... KABOOM!!!

You should get only air, and perhaps a bit of steam.
