On an application form I filled in prior to starting my current job, there was a question asking if I was gay. Now although this question does not concern me as such, there is some debate in the office as to whether or not it is either illegal or just irrelevent to ask this on an application for employment. Can anyone answer this question. If relevent, the form in question was submitted about 5 months ago.

While many activists and politicians are trying to change this, sexual preference is still not protected in hiring practices. It is perfectly legal to discriminate on this basis.

I would say that in the UK it's illegal to ask such a question - as it's illeagal to discriminate against race, religion, colour, sex or sexual orientation.
The form can be used if there is a note stating that these questions need not ve answered,
