I have an issue with my desktop. At least once a day i lose my assigned ip of 192.168.0.104 and it changes it to a private ip address of 169.254.141.85. I cant renew the ip address through windows, it freezes when it tries to repair it. If i unplug the Ethernet cable and plug it back in, it never gets assigned an IP. If use the command prompt and type ipconfig /renew it hangs indefinelty. The only way to solve it seems to unplug the cable and shutdown. If i do a plain restart the card is in the same state.

The usually occurs after i've come out of standyby a few times.

Thanks

I'm on a small network with 5 computers and two wireless computers. I've assigned my ip through the router based on the mac address

The layout is

Cable Modem--->D-link router--->with all the computers and the voip adapter behind the routher.

Your computer probably SHOULD have a "private" IP address if you are using a router.

The router itself would be assigned an "external" ip address by the cable co. equipment (the stuff not in your house, but the actual cable co's routers, etc...)

Your computer(s) will get their IP addresses (internal ones) from the router.

It sounds like the internet signal coming in from the cable line might be intermittently going down.

Best thing is to power down EVERYTHING including the computer, router, and modem.

Plug your modem back in first, wait for it to get a "lock" probably a "ready" light will light steady when "locked"

Then power your router and wait for it to boot up. Probably another "ready" light.

Finally power up the PC.

If you can't release/renew your IP address on the computer, I'd say your router is misadjusted or just going bad.

Also make sure DHCP is enabled on the router, and you should probably set your e-net configuration manually to the routers local IP. Usually "65.xxx.xxx.xxx" or something.

Regardless I say the problem is 60% chance in the router 40% PC.

Hope this helps.

Hi
Looks like the DHCP module has an issue or the Firmware, check for the following stuff

1) Upgrade the firmware if available
2) Try assinging the computer with the same IP as static and start using it

Ok...first trouble...you are using a dLink router...they are garbage.

Now to the meat and potatoes...

169.254.x.x is a WINDOWS assigned ip address stating that there is a problem with the connection to your router. The problem seems to be on that port of the router. Have you tried pluggin into a different port? Maybe if you stopped going into standby your ethernet adapter may stay functioning properly. Have you tried any of the basic troubleshooting?

This sounds like your router isn't responding to DHCP requests. You might want to check if your D-link is up to the latest code.
