In the era of Queen, Pink Floyd, Zepellin, Bob Marley, etc. talent was of essence. Times have changed. These days, if you're at least reasonably good looking and you want to make money, you don't model, you become an "artist" haha..riiight America. Originally, many of the artists had actual backgrounds in music, musical histories, their entire lives were dedicated to their love for music; now, overnight "success" is most probable. Essentially, money, fame and the "perks" associated with being a celebrity have overshadowed the true meaning of being an artist. There are not necessarily less talented musicians in the world today, but it is hard to be recognized among the infinite number of people who claim they are "musicians". Additionally, it is not possible to be compared to the likes of U2, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, etc. because many do not understand the work that goes into music.

I think it has to do with the accelerated pace of today's societies; artists or groups are not really given the chance to become, to explore their talents, before they're shoved off the rack by the next person/group that has a sound byte to offer. thus, most people go for the special effects, and not for any good solid communication through the musical medium. The quality of music making by iteself has been reduced to how interesting the click track is, or what kind of thumpa-thumpa the drummer can produce, rather than a melody to touch people's hearts and minds.
About a hundred years ago, there was a similar trend within the world of classical music ( sorry Debussy fans) and the 20th century, plagued as it was by world wars, lost its connection to the basic concepts of what makes music work. this didn't get any better as popular music continued to distance itself from " the establishment", so what's left doesn't have much to do with what really inspired people for hundreds of years before.
I know it sounds preachy, but I work in the classical music field, and that still gets out to people who take the time to listen. And yeah, I love Ella, and the Duke, and nobody can discount the Beatles or the Stones. Or Oscar Peterson, or Toots Thielman, or Tony Bennet, bless his 80 years.
Be discriminatory. refuse to buy junk. If you can stomach it , listen to something classical ( there's tons of old vinyl out there) and feel the difference. Even if you have to do it when nobody else is listening, so you don't get branded as a snob or fuddy-duddy by your "peers". they're your ears , your brain, and your sense of taste, after all.

yea i am 15 and i agree with you dude. well look at this. nowadays we have computers to make the music for us. nirvana (90's band-they sucked) had 2 actually LEARN how 2 play their instruments because they had computers doing it. same with vocals, mostly computers. lmao, same with that rap and hip hop crap. now take a look at the 70's and 80's. great music, just fantastic. i love the rock spectrum from the 80's, and look, no computers. AND IT'S STILL WITH US TODAY! half the bands around now won't last, this 'fall out boy'/backstreet boy/boy band bullshit won't last cause only girls (and gays) listen 2 it. everybody listened 2 the 80's stuff, ya know?

In this world of music right now, in my opinion, there are not many musicians that are very very interesting to follow or the musician that become so skilled. All are just play some music with no attitude or not use their heart 100%. I have to blame the record label and the producers, they are involved too much in any musician nowaday. They just thought about money, money and money only. You are right dude, nowadays music is so so so different not like the old times. But we have thanked to God, that we still have many old times musician that are really a musician for me also. They have to teach anyone in music industry now, to bring some new cool music to this world.

i'm going to be 18 soon but i agree with you.nowadays mediocre singers sing something without much passion and emotion.and they earn lots of money then they crash and burn sooner or later.the record companies rather cash in on something temporarily than find a real star that has staying power.plus, young kids with more buying power nowadays compared to their parents are influencing the record companies to cater to what they want.some of the song lyrics are so cheesy and horrible to listen to. anyway, some of the music out there is not bad if only you'll give them a chance. times change and the generations before you,i'm talking about late 19 or early 20th century, will not like pink floyd too.

Because they exclude the merit of music and just include something to gain popularity.
Look how R&B & Hip-Hop for now being weak this year (2006)!
Look at the Grammy nominations. Most of the entries were unrecognizable, because it's really weak production and recordings.
All they want is to sell records, but when you buy, you feel so frustrated of the contains. It's really crap. The music, the lyrics and those stuff.
For now I could say, Pop, Rock/Alternative, Country and Traditionals are among decent music to listen today. Save them!

all of those people that just answered that are OLD...! i like the oldies also.. but some new music is good also... Red hot chillie peppers are still pretty good, a great song only comes along once in a while, im sure not every song that everyone of those artists wrote were great... you only hear the select few, the greats. The oldies stations have a lot more music to choose from, so they choose to play the best from those decades.

I would agree with you about mainstream music, but you have to dig a bit deeper to find true quality anyway.still loads of great
music around if you know where to look.you need to get your
shovel and start digging mate. All the musicians you named
are old and because of that they have had years to become
great. In a few years time we will know which new bands are
great as well.

It's called de-evolution. It's a monopoly, and it's against FCC rules, but the music we are programmed to listen to is being fed to us by a parent company that owns the record labels, the radio stations, mtv, and so on. Even the so-called indie record labels, if they are fashionable, are owned by the parent company and get to keep their names. We don't have a choice if we listen to the big radio stations. Listen to college radio, look for your music on the internet. There is amazing music out there, we just don't get to hear it. Don't give up, the next big thing is coming.
