The bridge is painted a special metallic grey paint that acts as an anode - that is, the paint oxidizes more easily than the steel, and so it stops the bridge from rusting. Of course, this means it needs to be painted twice each year...and it takes 6 months to paint it...you get the picture. Still, it was started during the Great Depression, and they still haven't had to replace a single nut, bolt or rivet, so I guess it works.

The bridge was painted grey because grey is the closest colour to the natural colour of steel. In addition, it does not show dirt and dust.
