first of all just to let you know hole in the head would not make them breathe hard and oscars dont need bubble wands or anything like that they just play in them ... trust me i have two oscars had them for awhile i put a bubbler on sometimes if they have nothin to do and put a ping pong ball in and then turn the air off. And You Dont Need a 55 gallon for an oscar they do fine in a 40 / 44 gallon tank . I would do a 30% to 50% water change but never do 50% when nothings wrong it gets rid of alot of beneficial bacteria so only do it right now and maybe in 4 - 7 days.

Do an immediate water change. After that, be sure he's in at least a 55 gallon tank. If that's not possible, consider rehoming home at a pet store or someone who wants him. If it is at least 55 gallons, be sure to do weekly water changes of about 30%, more if you don't have good filtration. Here's a good link for oscars, search and read through the articles and posts on how to properly care for them.

Always do a water change if in doubt, and don't forget the chlorine neutraliser.
Make sure it has oxygen, either through air bubbles or pump breaking water surface.

If it does die, invest in some nicer fish, Barra and Oscars are really messy eaters and so there harder work.
sorry mate. :(

If it is breathing hard, it is most likely due to not having enough oxygen in the tank, put a power head in your tank, or one of those bubble makers.

what is wrong with him? how old is he? If you give more info, you might get a better answer. Breathing really had could be something to do with not enough oxygen....do you use CO2 or have enough surface agitation to oxygenate the water??

Are its gill inflamed? It may have gill disease if that is the case. Buy some medication such as Coppersafe and treat him for the period of time listed. Do a water change and make sure he is getting enough oxygen. You do have a bubble wand in there right?

if it is listless and breathing hard it could be ammonia or nitrite or nitrate poisoning. i would definitely go with a major water change -- that is your best bet.
