With straight USB cable, 5 meters, or a little over 16 feet. Anything longer will require a boost from a powered USB hub (travel hubs typically just plug into the USB port and split the signal, but desk hubs will have an AC adapter). And that's just for a straight cable. If you're using a USB-powered device, or multiple devices hooked up on the end of the same long extension, you might find that you need to add a powered hub more often. If you're really trying to push that limit, I'd really suggest buying a pair of 8-footers instead of one 16-footer, so you have the option of adding power at the middle if necessary. And if you're trying to network in this manner, stick to ethernet where possible. Even CAT-5e ethernet cable plugged into USB adapters should allow you to go greater distances without requiring a boost of power.
