I had some when i was a bit younger. They were interesting pets. We kept them in a glass aquarium with those little rocks you put on the bottom of fish tanks. We also put some rocks in the bottom, good small flat ones. I know we fed them food from a container we bought at the pet store. We had four of them and we use to build mazes out of shoe boxes and race them. I think they are pretty good pets if your a busy person and want a pet that doesn't need much care and love. Now your making me want to get some more! : )

No dairie. They like peanut butter. You should have coral (they play on it and it gives their outer skeleton calcium), salt water, fresh water, keep it warm and humid, fake plants that are firm and wire based, shelter (they like pots), 6+ inches of sand, an isolation tank for when they molt, friends, several extra shells, drift wood, and other aquarium decrotive things. They love to play and need a variaty of food. Add calcium spray to their food. They should have a different variaty of food every other day, and they do pinch you, but not purposely, they just don't want to fall. You need more freshwater than salt water. They do make weird noises and vibrate on you, but thats a good thing. They are more active at night, and like to play when you aren't looking until the get used to you. Hermit crabs get pretty big. They live as long as turles. (100 years) if taken careof properly and grow very very very slowly. Loss of legs mean that its nervous and stressed out from changes. If he loses many legs, you have to hand feed it and put him in his water dish for a few minutes. They need a "bath" in freshwater weekly and they drain their shells once in a while, so seeing reddish/brownish kind of things coming from its shell its normal. Hermit cras have shell fights, the want the others shell so they try to pull it off of the other. If this happens, don't try to stop it. Hermit crabs are from tropical places near beaches and they don't need interferance from you. Let nature take its course. But if you have enough shells, this won't happen often. After cleaning their crabitat, put everything where it was or they will get stressed out. Crabs are fine together, they don't need to be introduced to one another. crabs need excercise, when they are big enough, they can crawl around in a hamster ball and they can't crawl under small things or be crush/eaten by an animal or person. (Well they can, but most people will notice the ball before stepping on him) They only way to tell the difference from a boy and girl is two dots. Turn your crab upside down and see if he comes out of his shell enough. The dots are either black or white, they are perfectly round, they are supposedly for laying eggs. If they have dots, they are female. Your crab might not want to come out that far, though. That's all I can say without giving you a 20 page long answer. i hope the other info helped! Good luck, bye!

Everything that was said above is pretty correct only dont just put a bowl of water in there, you need a sponge in the water dish because they are not very bright and will drown themselves so the sponge soaks up the water and they suck it out of the sponge, also as far as food, the smaller the hermit crab the smaller the food, we feed ours the powdered hermit crab food cuz it's easier for them to eat and has vitimans in it, plus you need to included at minimum 2 extra empty slightly larger shells in case they want to switch them. Which even if you have the empty ones in there they might not like them.

Despite popular belief, hermit crabs are VERY hard to take care of. The oldest one I had was a year old, and trust me, I had a lot. If you still plan to get them, get them a glass tank with gravel (sand is too messy) and lots of logs and stuff for them to crawl on. Be warned, they are little escape artists and will get out any chance they get! I had one crawl up a cord, onto my shelf, climb down, and end up in the closet of our computer room. The only reason I found it was because he was on a garbage bag and it was crinkling. lol Give them a large but shallow water dish and put a little bit of sea salt in it. (Not table salt!!) Give them crab food and fresh fruits and veggies about once a week. Take the old food out or they will bury it. Mist the tank every once in awhile and give them a low heat heater that can go under the tank (only under a small portion so they can get away from the heat). I don't recommend a light because it could dry them out. GIVE THEM CALCIUM! Put the powder in their food, they need it to molt. Hope this helps!
