What do you call the people who were born in the USA? I mean, you call yourselves "americans", but canadians, chileans and argentinians are also american people as well as mexicans because they all were born in America which happens to be a whole continent.
Now, people from Colombia are colombians, people from Brazil, brazilians, Peru has peruvian people, but what about the USA's people? Are you United Statians?, wait, Mexico's official name is Mexican United States, so what the hell are you? Plain Gringoes?, I guess that's the name that suits you better, so, why don't you change USA for Gringoland?

Let me correct you chilango. The offical name of Mexico is not Mexican United States. OPEN UP A HISTORY BOOK AND READ IT!!!!!!!!! It is stupid people like you that drive me up the wall! The offical name is The United Mexican States! What's the diffrence? If you can't tell then you don't deserve to know! People born in the USA are called Americans, because the official name of this country is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! That is why we are called AMERICANS! Got it? Or do you need further explanation?

People from Mexico call themselves Canadians, those from Mexico, Mexicans, which leaves "Americans" for us.

Nope it's not a perfect word, but it's understood the world over. Incidentally in Spanish there is a word for "someone from the United States of America" (Estadounidense), however in english we lack that word.

I've known a few Canadians that get bothered by this, but the majority of them and the Mexicans don't care from what I can tell

USA = United States of America thus Americans.

Columbians, Brazilians, etc. would be better categorized as South Americans.

hey if we did that then we would have a reason to build a wall to keep mexico out. afterall that would make the entire name of our country a deragatory term in mexico.

Because when anyone hears "America" they think of the US... and nobody thinks of the continent, other than geography geeks who think continents are united somehow by name.

I wish we can just call ourselves The Get-Along-Gang, but it doesn't quite work like that here in the good ole U.S. of A.
