If you have a function like f(x) = x^2 + 2x + 1, you can simply plug in some positive and negative values for x (try -4, -3, -2 , -1 , 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and calculate what f(x) would be.
plot the points on a graph, with the y values representing f(x) and the x values representing, well, x. :-)
If you don't get a complete enough picture of what the graph will look like, try some more values for x, such as 0.5 or -5.
make a little table with x and f(x) heading two columns, and list all the values you are trying for x in the x column, and all the resulting values you calculate for y in the f(x) column. then plot all those pairs of numbers.

Usually rectangular, with x on the horizontal axis and the function value on the vertical. But in some cases, the function is of an angle, and it may be more convenient to do it in polar form.

if u working with f(x), it means that you have two variables, ie x and y, so that when u change x, the value of f(x) changes. So f(x) here is variable 'y'...so better use a 2D graph with x and y axis only.
change the values of X, and plot the value's of f(x) on y.
