I run a small online store and usually spend around $15k/year on shipping and was wondering if any of the major shippers offer some sort of "bulk" or discount to heavy shippers.

The USPS has a program called Customer Connect that runs through the Click N Ship program that you should look into. I'm surprised your Letter Carrier hasn't approached you about this program. http://www.usps.com/business/welcome.htm?from=doorwaybar&page=business
If your area's Letter Carriers aren't up to speed on this new program, which is specifically targeting your type of shipper, then feel free to email me at Spielmanjr@yahoo.com

Private companies (UPS and FedEx) will evaluate your shipping business and potential for business and make a determination if a discount is possible. However you might also inquire on what the company has to offer in terms of technology that can make your business efficient. How can you get the information from your online store onto the shipping label? How can you get the tracking number back into your systems so that your buyer can track the package themselves? What type of technology integration do they offer (in addition to a fair price) to benefit your online store and save you time?

You can get a UPS discount by setting up an on-line account and then dropping off the package at a local UPS store or distribution center. Once you get to a certain dollar volume per week you can get another discount level, plus they will do a pickup at your location. For small items, USPS is usually the cheapest carrier.

Negotiating volume shipping discounts is big business for consultants who specialize in doing the negotations. There are ongoing challenges of rules and rates constantly changing.

USPS has a priority box that is labeled specifically for APO/FPOs. From the USPS website: "The Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box ships for $2.00 less when sent to an overseas APO or FPO address. Price is based on qualifying ZIP Code. A military-branded Priority Mail APO/FPO Flat Rate Box is available and can be ordered online." UPS and FedEx will cause you to go broke trying to ship to him. Neither one will allow a PO box, and only use a phyical address.

Yes, in fact they do! I work for FedEx (not Customer Service but for IT Server Support) and you can call 1-800-GO-FEDEX and talk to Customer Service about opening a FedEx account if you haven't already gotten one and also mention that you do a large amount of shipping. I know also if you register at FedEx.com you can get a 15% discount as well. (I don't know too much about it since FedEx.com is a different area of support. I hope this helps and best of luck!

The answer is YES! You have to contact them through the 1-800-GO FEDEX number. When you get on the line, follow the prompts. When you get a representative, tell them what you need and they will connect you to the correct department. Happy shipping!
