We call students in their first year of high school or college freshmen and students in their second year sophomores. The freshmen is because they are coming to school fresh and new. Sophomore is from the Greek and is a nod to the fact that they are wise in the ways of the school and how it works though they have not acquired enough knowledge to graduate. The third year we call Junior year and the fourth we call Senior year. Americans in general are fond of nicknames and titles so we tend to assign them to everything.

Freshman and a sophomore are 9th and 10th grade in high school or the first two years of college.

Year 10-Sophmore
Year 11-Junior
Year 12- Senior
I lived in Australia for almost two years and I was thrown off by the yr 9...etc!

Freshmans are usually teens who are in school and the average ages are from 13-15. And Sophmores have completed their freshman year and the average ages are 14-16.

Year nine is freshman and ten is sophomore. I went to school in Australia for a year, in year 11 (junior year).

If you're talking about high school, 9th grade is freshman, and 10th grade is sophomore. 11th grade is Junior and 12th grade is senior. :D confusing, yah, but hey. I wonder where the word sophomore came from?

juniors 3rd yr students
seniors 4th yr students or higher
