i never had a full functioning family so i know where you're coming from, and i really do think its just america being affected entirley currently, i dont know i think its because we focus so much on media and have no sense of culture, and thus dont engage in cultural activities that involve family anymore. Kids are growing up really fast these days and learning things they shouldnt at such a young age, and thus becoming adult faster, and thinking that tehy should leave their homes and be independent on their own, divorces are happening because everyones choosing the wrong mate, and not learning from their mistakes, things are just getting crazy, and i bet you one day, there will be no such thing as a wholesome family...
and when that day comes, well, its not too far away, so just wait....
good question
fuzzy...

What do you mean by "family unit"? One man and one woman in marriage to raise kids?
The 50s have come and gone. America tried making the "family unit" you described as the only acceptable social norm. This trapped many women in abusive marriages. They would have been scorned by family if they tried to leave and save their lives.
The "family unit" you are referring to is a rather modern concept. Families in the past often allowed for men to have many wives and concubines and the children were raised by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older cousins, etc.
The concept of family units are not coming to an end. There are still many of the husband and wife families, but it has been extended to families who consist of other variations of loving people; sometimes same sex, sometimes one parent, sometimes weird love-circles.
Divorces can be a sad thing, and not everyone is comfortable with the idea of homosexuals having families, but personally, I would much rather have two people of the same sex be together in a caring way than for someone to be locked in a sad and abusive marriage. The latter, I believe, is more damaging to the children.
Yes, there are some people who make a joke out of marriage *cough/brittany spears* but there are some wonderful and caring families in America and that trait is not about to end soon.

The concept is fine. The reality is a bit messier. Careers, two-incomes required to make it among the working class, less time for intimacy have led to more strains.
And it was never great--people just used to stay married longer because it was harder to get divorced... no matter how miserable they were, and they passed on a lot of bad relationship skills, and the whole market for teaching relationship skills caters to the female-only perspective because that's who watches that stuff, and guys don't have the "gentleman" role models so much anymore.
Lots of functional issues, but marriage--although more likely to end in divorce--is probably no worse off than it was, and there is probably less violence in the homes because people can leave easily. Not that it helped O.J's wife.
Maybe it should be harder to get married?

Yes, it is coming to an end. The 'family unit' is so 'out of style' these days. People don't care about family anymore. You can watch a night of television and tell that. Where are all the family sitcoms? It worries me, and it's scary. If you dont' have family, what do you have?

Define "unusual" realtionships. The family unit does not have to be defined as 1 mother (female) 1 father (male) and 2.5 children. The family unit is ANY group of people who love and support one another unconditionally. MY family consists of my daughter, and the array of friends I have had since childhood. (some since we were in diapers) I do not consider those I am related to by blood as my family as most of them were never supportive while I was growing up and my mother put conditions on love ("I love you when you behave, when you don't behave I wish you were dead"). The family "unit" is alive and well just not as a "traitional" family unit.

you now that is a good question. families are deteriorating, not just in america, but all over the world. it is a sad thing to see since the family unit is so important. but to be completely honest, it wont get better as long as individuals continue to be as selfish as they are. there are a lot of changes needed to make things better. not just in the family circle, but in the world. the world as a whole needs to adjust their thinking and their morals before things will change. and the only source powerful enough to effect change in that way, on that level is God.

With the decline of the "nuclear relatives" (mom, father, little ones) and boost of unmarried-figure and grandparent households (grandparents raising grandchildren), a gay nuclear relatives is purely yet another piece of the puzzle. better importantly, it type of feels what extremely concerns are the little ones. it really is puzzling adequate growing up in recent times, yet at the same time as a baby isn't considered area of a "valid" relatives, that in hardship-free words brings better rigidity on the youngster. Btw, some people persistently say that gay people can not have little ones. those people look unaware that many gay people were in a heterosexual marriage with little ones and at the instantaneous are raising their very personal little ones. for sure, it really is as well to the gay those that are parenting their very personal little ones by skill of different preparations.

It seems like it doesn't it. That's because you have all these groups who want to rid family units, which is sad.
It will never end, unless husbands and wives start speaking up to those who want to destroy the family units. God help us all!
