This just happened to me! I broke a coffee cup of a friend and I knew it was a gift. I felt so guilty I bought her another cup, but I knew it wouldn't get to me in time. (Bought it on E-bay) I eventually just told her and everthing was fine. I told her I bought her another one and she said I didn't have to, but I did it anyway. hope it's nice.

Just Tell the Person. It might not be so bad.

I tell them right away and offer to replace it. That's what I'd want them to do and, well, do unto others!
