I'm going to guess that you're speaking of Engineers in the corporate world, and not the guys that control trains.

Engineers are the people who figure stuff out. They setup, adjust, maintain, and enhance existing systems. Most don't work with instruction manuals, they are hired to figure out the stuff that ISN'T in the manual. A Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering field will usually start about $45,000 and go from there. Engineers that work on contract make more, but usually lack any sort of benefits program, and are usually only employed for a set amount of time.

Engineer:
to design or create using the techniques or methods of engineering
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Engineer

An Engineer creates something new, or improves upon and already existing design, like adding touch tones to phones.

The salary varies. It just depends on how good they are at what they do. An example of this would be the engineers of Google. They created something new and now they are freakin rich.

Engineers also drive trains and carry a big calculator.

Broadly, they make use of science to design and build things. Civil engineers do bridges, dams, highways, canals and such. Mechanical engineers make machinery of all sorts. Electrical engineers make all the stuff that power companies use. Electronic engineers own all the transistors and related stuff. Aeronautical engineers do airplanes and spacecraft. Chemical engineers do refineries. Many branches. Salaries are very good, check your Sunday paper or Craig's list for some ideas. Education requirement varies by field, but in general a Bachelor of Science will do for openers. In some fields, a Masters of Science in almost a necessity.

Scientists discover great principles, Engineers put them to work. Hertz discovered electro-magnetic waves. A scientist, all he got out of it was a unit named after him. Marconi took Hertz's work and made radio. Founded the company that would become RCA and NBC.

There are many types of engineers,
electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, aerospace engineers, software engineers, industrial engineers, just to name a few. Salaries are also widely varied, even within a specific field, but it usually depends a lot on your experience.
I graduated with a B.S. in electrical engineering, but I am a software engineer. I have about 14 years of experience and I made over $114,000 in 2006, but there are people at my company who make a lot less and who make a lot more.

Beginning could be as little as $40-50,000 per year. An Engineer has a number of possible duties ranging from product development, to being a superintendent for a work area, to ensuring that plans offered meet requirements, or that work being done is meeting the requirements of a job. It really depends on what kind of work you are interested in. If "it" goes wrong though, you could be held liable for anything missed, or over looked.

depends on engineer. I went to DeVry for electronical engineering technologist, EET.

My job would of been to sit in a cubical and to take blue prints another engineer drew up and to make that product from scratch and to make it work. I didn't think of the idea, I wouldn't design the idea, I would only build the idea after another thought of it and designed it. My salary would of been on average 65k per year and I would be back in school at least every 2 years for more classes to always keep up.

glad I didn't go that route.

There are many type of engineers (mechanical, electrical, even network(IT)) and the level of their education/experience and field of study have a large impact on the salaries they can obtain.

They take laws of science and apply them to do things. They start at 50k and probably can retire at twice that if you do things right. If you do things wrong you will get laid off every 3 years.
