When my eyes hurt I tend to allow myself to be in a darker environment or close my eyes (which does more times than not leads to me sleeping). But sitting in a dark room helps, but sitting in the dark looking at your computer screen or television isnt going to help any, or at least not for me! If i ignore the pain than eventually i end up with a headache from hell, so there it is!!

Steam from the shower helps and so do warm tea bags placed over the eyelids for about 20 minutes.

Seriously, lay of the computer for a while. Rest. Cold compress will help with any possible puffiness. For me it's simply laying off the computer, not watching TV and getting some much needed rest.
