Let Howard's age now equal x. Then, Tony's age now equals x+3. If five years ago the sum of their ages was 59, now the sum of their ages would be 59+10= 69 (each person has aged 5 years).
Then: 2x+3= 69
2x = 66
x = 33
33+3 = 36
So: Tony is 36 years old.

therefore,the age of Tony is now x+3 years
Therefore,5 years back the age of Howard and Tony were x-5 and x+3-5 or x-2 years respectively
By the problem
x-5+x-2=59
=>2x-7=59
=>2x=66
