Two years ago i had an '87 Chevy Caprice with a 4.3 liter v6. It had NO options except a cd player which i installed myself. The car got 18 mpg...which is what i really miss. My new truck gets 12. Not to mention, the caprice seemed bulletproof, except for the tranny, which is why i sold it. Can anybody console me?

The truck is a '98 Chevy 1500 4x4 with the vortec 350. The truck is sooo powerful and fast...i LOVE everything about it except the gas mileage...which is about 12 average. Why is it so bad? Even fueleconomy.gov says it should be 14.8.

I know i've answered some of the same questions as you. I own a '97 z71 w/vortec 350. I get 16.6 mpg on average( i check it every tank). It has 180,000 mi. I put a K&N filter on it and it dropped to 15.2mpg. I was also using the sh***y cheaper gas (local corner mart)and got 14.3 mpg. I put a fram back on it and started using top tier fuel (still 87 octane) just better gas. I change my oil religously at 3000mi and keep my tires rotated. 265/75/16 stock size, but i do keep my tire psi at 40-45 for less rolling resistance, and it really doesn't affecty the ride quality. ( chevy has always built a good riding truck).
i hav owned a 4.3 in a 98 jimmy and it got worse mpg, you must have gotten lucky w/ the caprice since it was heavier.
just be glad you don't own a ford, ha!ha!

I don't know what size or brand your truck is but the sweet old Caprice with 262 cu.in. V6 was in a 3,600 - 3,800 pound car. The truck ? brand is is 1,500 - 2,000 heavier. It takes horsepower to lug weight around every time you drive it. Drive it on a 200 mile trip and see if the mileage improves. Geepers, my daughter has an 04 Tahoe that regularly gets 20 miles per gallon on trips. That moose weighs close to 6,000 lbs. She's always used 5w-30 100% synthetic oil in it since it was new. Do you really want to cry? I drove from up state NY. to NC. this past Fall in a 98, S-10 4wd. with the 4.3 V6. It only has 27,800 miles on it and got 24.6 mpg. average for the entire trip. I blasted my way down route 95 and carried 403.00 lbs. of furniture down. I came back empty.

Why on earth did you buy truck????? Get rid of the gas guzzling truck and find another Caprice. I don't know, seems to me fixing the trans would have been a lot cheaper than buying a truck.
