Anything I can do besides sending it in to Apple?
What are Apple's requirements for changing the battery and how long will it take?

Mine isn't nearly old enough to require a new battery, so I don't know what it would involve to have Apple do it for you, but there are a few steps you should take first:

1. If you haven't already downloaded iTunes 7, do so, and then update your iPod's firmware to the latest available version. This will allow you to adjust the backlight brightness under the Settings menu on the iPod. Set it as low as is still easy for you to read.

2. Set the backlight timer to 2 seconds so it's not wasting juice on lighting up the world around it.

3. Don't crank the volume (battery life estimates are always based on a moderately loud volume setting, no matter the manufacturer).

4. Clear all of your files off the iPod periodically and then reload them afterwards. This will take any song files that were split up into multiple file fragments and group each track into one continuous file, which means the hard-drive will be wasting less power by not having to chase down a bunch of little file chunks when it could just read each track straight through much easier. And defragment your computer's hard-drive every now and then to see it achieve a similar performance boost, if you don't do it regularly already.

attempt to replace it with a clean one (in case you may...) This time, as quickly as you're taking the ipod out, do no longer turn it on, fairly cost it appropriate away. cost it for finished 24 hours or in case you won't be able to look forward to it, a minimum of cost as long as what Apple says suitable to the dimensions of the existence of the battery (that is often published interior the handbook e book or the decrease back of the container). continuously do this for a clean digital contraptions that runs on battery, continuously cost it for twenty-four hours until now you employ it for the 1st time.
