If you wanna see all the sight seeing of Vietnam, maybe your travel requires a month.
First you will spend a 8 days in Northern Vietnam. In 8 days you can visit Sapa, Halong bay, Haiphong- an important port city of this country. Certainly you can pass Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Why? Coz you can discover many interesting things here. especcially you can wakl along the old street and buy some things for souvernir. Maybe 1 day and night on weekend (from Friday to Sunday) in Hanoi is enough.
Then you can travel by train to the centre of Vietnam, there you can discover Haivan pass before visiting Hue-old citadel of Nguyen Dynasty. It takes you may be 5 days inclusive stopping for travel, coz you travel by train. There are also many beautyful sight seeing here. You can acknowledge how the king in the past time live and listen the folk song on the Huong river. Before going to Hue, you can stop at Hai Van pass to admire the nature. But what a pity that the train doesnt stop for a while, so that you must take a stop at Danang- also an important city in Vietnam, then take a motorbike- xe om back to Hai Van pass. You ll spend a majestical night in the old street Hoi An to make latern or something like that. Then you continue your travel to Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon- a dynamic city of Vietnam.Sorry when i cant show you all the details, that tell where you should go. But in the last day you can spend to discover the life of the pepole in Southern Vietnam, when you go to see the market on the river, i m sure that you ll experience many thing, there they buy everything you need for your daily life.
Sorry, i cant count exactly how many days you ll spend for a travel around Vietnam. but it takes exactly 1 Month.

We spend over a month almost every summer in Vietnam. As much time as we are there we haven't scratched the surface on seeing all the wonderful sites. If you really tried to go to every place that was beautiful and historical it would take a life time. Checking out all the good food in the different parts of the country would take another life time. Good Luck. Cheers

to really see all the wonderful sites in vietnam would take a very, very long time. i've been going there for ten years and still haven't made it past nha trang. although the last few years have been mostly spent setting up our businesses, there are just so many beautiful things to see.
vietnam has over sixty provinces. each one has a capitol city that you could spend a day exploring. dozens of markets and temples in each province , some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and friendly people everywhere who want to invite you to their homes. it is as long as the eastern seaboard of the united states and has a history dating back thousands of years.
you could book a really extensive vacation that would hit the most popular destinations in about two weeks. but there is much more off the beaten path.
wherever you start your journey, try to end it at ha tien and phu quoc. i assure you you'll never want to leave.
enjoy!
ps, when you get to vung tau stop at tommy's bar on the beach, sign your name on the wall and tell "belly" i said hi!

Tours operators have packaged tours that include sites from North to South lasting from seven to twenty-one days, with many from 11 to 14 days. Remember Vietnam is a rather narrow but long country. It's a thousand miles (1700 km) between Hanoi and Saigon so if you'd rather take a train than a plane on your North-South route, you'd need to add a couple of extra days to your trip.
I'd say you can see the major sites in the North, Center and South in as little as a week to ten days total.

I think that it would probably take about a week or two. It depends on how many places you want to go. I am just approximating and it should take no more than two weeks, at the most.
