It takes only a simple majority in the House to impeach. It takes 2/3 majority in the Senate to convict & remove from office.
The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

It's not an action to be taken lightly. By raising the standard, you don't get some crazy congress with a thin majority playing politics and constantly shutting down the government and blackmailing the President.
