I like pop, soft rock, and R&B. I wanna be a pop singer, people are so negative about that. No wonder so many ppls dreams are crushed and they end up working some stupid job they hate...

All my favorites (in order) are these: classical/opera, broadway (those two are what I sing), movie soundtracks, country, jazz, R&B, good rock, and only really good pop. It's rare that I find contemporary music that I will listen to because now it's become so cheesy.
I won't discourage you from wanting to be a pop singer, but I will say that you are going to have to be REALLY talented in singing and songwriting if you want a career in it. You have to be committed to it, and work really hard...and your music has to be somehow different from everyone else. You have to be unique and set your own rules - don't look, act or sing like anyone else, let your true self shine through the music and it'll be good.
I prefer to sing opera and broadway styles just because I don't feel limited to singing in one or two octaves with the same technique over and over. But there are some great pop and rock songs out there, and some people can really come up with good stuff! But don't be prejudiced to one genre...a good musician appreciates all styles and has a broad expanse of knowledge and understanding of all genres. Pop music isn't always what works for everyone. I like rock, and don't let what people say get in the way of your dreams. It's not their life it's yours and you have to live your life for you not them, Good luck, I hope your dream of becoming a pop singer comes true!

Rock. Different eras of it. And Metal. Most likely would have no use for my mp3 player without them. Absolutely adore:
AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Rammestein, System of a Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen... I could go on for days!
But as to your dreams, go for it! I would just suggest having a backup plan in case it doesn't pan out like you want. But if you really have your heart set on something, you should definitely at least try. At least you'll amass some great stories for your grandkids.

Good pop is a wonderful thing... bad pop is just upsetting!
My favourite genres are real hip hop music, blues, funk, soul, rock, jazz and good pop music.
