We can be if our thoughts and desires control us instead of us controlling them.

We are definitely prisoners of our thoughts and desires. That's why we sometimes lead troubled lives. The alternative would be to live a life free of emotion and only Vulcans and Bill Gates are able to do that. The trick is to keep the thoughts and desires just under the surface (and the girly books under the mattress).

I think that yes is a far to simple answer to this question.
The word prisoner in effect i think here has been used to suggest that we are captive. In saying that we are captive denys the fact that thought processes can be changed via external and internal and influences. Cognative behavioral therapies go a long way to show this.

Yes, fortunately.
Suppose you were the prisoner of someone else's thoughts and desires!
Although....sometimes....

We can be, but we don't have to be. I like these scriptures and I'm typing them for my own benefit because I've been tripping up a lot lately and losing my freedom.
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace. (Romans 8:5-6)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
(Galatians 5:1)
That's exactly what it feels like to me - a big heavy burden. A pastor who helped me break loose from some troubles once used to say, "It's time to kick butt." Always made me laugh. He was a hoot. And I love him for coming alongside when I needed help.
I'm talking to myself here...not preaching. Thanks for the therapy session.

sufferer on one area, prisoner on the different. You gotta study to bounce on the detention center bars. Fall one way your'e a prisoner. Fall the different and your'e a sufferer. that could be a relaxing dance.

It's amazing -- the mind is such a powerful thing -- can "free" us or 'freeze" us.
If you haven't seen the movie, "Wings of the Dove", please rent it when you have some time. Your question could be the theme song for that movie. It is a great storyline, and the acting is superb!

I agree that we are, however; those same two things (while keeping us prisoner of sorts) ALSO drive us forward to succeed and achieve them----
