Acting troups travelled around. If a woman travelled around with a bunch of men at that period of time, people would figure she was "involved" with any/all of them, therefore a bad person that decent people wouldn't want to be in the same building with. That's why boys or young men did the women's roles.

The answer to this question really is the Catholic Church.

During the times you mentioned the Catholic Church was HUGE in Europe. The Catholic church has always deemed women to be the bearers of original sin, meaning that women by nature were sinful. Therefore women were not allowed to play any role in public theater.

Life back then for the royals was hugely dictated by the church. The royals were the ones who made the finaldecisions but usually with a big ol' push from the church.

Back then it was common for women to be in power of their households, but not much more than that. A woman in power, such as royalty, without a man beside her was unheard of until Queen Mary Tudor took teh throne of England. Until then there was always a King and a Queen, not a Queen and a Prince Regent. But that's another question alltogether.

Women weren't allowed to act in plays because the church made it so. Women were sinful and dirty beings, always made to atone for the original sin.
