what my family did was to buy mouse traps from the 99 cent store and we used oily sausage as the food to attract them. It certainly did work, and the rats died and i haven't seen any since! be careful to use gloves when throwing them away, since they might have germs....

A large cat, or 2 ferrets, or a rat terrier. traps work too slowly to completely eliminate rats, and they are very clever about traps after the first couple of times. Rats are much smarter than mice and therefore harder to get rid of. short of hiring a pro (who uses chemicals) you will not be able to get rid of the rats without introducing some equally crafty predators.

You'll need a trap or traps. They have giant rat-sized spring traps, glue tray traps, trap door traps (these don't kill the rat, they just contain it until you bring to a field and set it free) and now there's this crazy electric trap that electrocutes them.
Prices range from $3 to $40 depending on what you like.
And don't forget to seal up the hole where they're coming into your home. Usually they find a way to come in where the plumbing pipes enter the walls - places like that.
