Prior to the convenient advent of wipes when changing babies.
What did the mums of old use to clean babies bottom after a horendous poo??? Did they just rely on the cloth at hand??

Wash cloths, Bathing. Tissues.
Diapers were cloth and a corner of an already wet diaper worked best.

My mom used washcloths on us, its what her mom used on her kids too. But not just any cloth lying around the bathroom. "Special" washcloths no one would wash their face or hands with. They were used for a diaper change, put in the wash with the diaper and ready to go again. An old diaper worked great too.

I did the same thing with my two cloth diapered kids. Bought the little baby washcloths special for it. Easy, good for the environment and no nasty chemicals on my baby's sensitive areas. Funny, clean ups that take 4 or 5 of the "wipes" were easy with one warm damp washcloth. And the useless too thin cloth diapers they sell at non-baby stores - they were great for cleaning messy bottoms too.

Good Luck!

When my son was little, he was allergic to every kind of disposable diaper on the market and the wipes too. We would fill a wipes tub with damp papertowels. We also would carry a large bag of little cloths to get wet and a plastic bag to put the dirty ones in until we got home. A cleanish spot on the cloth diaper worked well in a pinch.

nappy liners have been available for 37 years that I know of,my mother used them for by baby sister back then. they are still available,I've seen them in the shops .I used to use them with cloth nappies 15 years ago LOL.I used to line the nappy with the liner, that kept the nappy from the worst of the poo, and use a damp one to wipe the baby with.I also used to keep a container of damp liners in the nappy bag when we traveled and just toss them when they wer used.i know some people who soaked them along with the nappies, but they wre'nt that expensive.
so wet nappy liner or face cloth and a good nappy rash cream :)

Yes, we used soft diapers with lotion or soap and water on them.
