I watched American Idol & the same questions came about.

Singing through your nose could be natural. If you are from the deep South this is a natural way to sing or speak.

A nasal sound is produced when your soft palate (back of the roof of your mouth) is too low and your breath is not being controlled properly resulting in too much air in the wrong space. It is not a healthy way to sing. A way to stop or help place your voice is pretend you are yawning. Do you feel how open your throat is and how low your soft palate is? That is the space you should feel when you are singing. Try singing a piece on only vowels and try feeling that openness throughout. Then add consonants after you are able to achieve that open feeling. Hope this helps! good luck!

your voice is more narrowly sounding and you wont be able to hold long tones as long. you sing through your nose by taking your breaths from your nose instead of your diaphragm
