I remembered Man Utd visited Singapore in the 80s. During that time, Bryan Robson was still in the team, and they were not as successful as they were now. But the crowd that were there to greet them were huge. Which is to say, they already have a huge fan base even before they won the treble. So I don't think it is mainly because they are winning titles, but I felt it is more on publicity and personalities of the team. Man Utd are supported because they have big personalities like Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Rooney and Ronaldo. These players are able to attract many fans across the world. And it helps as most of the matches feature them week in week out on TV and in the newspaper and internet. And of course winning titles help, but it also create awareness of the team by the publicity team. And this is precisely the same reason why LA Galaxy is buying Beckham.

Because they play the best football known to man and have for years. It started with the Busby babes before tradgedy struck in 1958. After that the team was rebuilt and achieved success in 1968 by winning the European Cup. They slumped in 1974 to the 2nd division of the day but still had stadiums packed to capacity proving how strong there fan base was. They are the most successful team of the past 20 years by a mile. They have 77500 fans watch every home game, 20000 more than the nearest rival. Old Trafford is always full on match days and manchester united are the biggest gaurentee to a full house if there playing away.

People like them not only because they perform greatly but also cause they respect their fans, the whole atmosphere about the club is magical.

I guess its their ability to entertain. Just Liverpool in the 80s. Most fans wants a entertianing game.

because they're successful with a long history of winning trophies.Furthermore,people do support clubs that have a big fan base.And,lets say,if your dad supports that club you'll most probably support it too.it's like being influenced since young.

they've been very successful for a very long time.. plus they've got lot of cash so they can easily promote themselves, i guess..
but for me personally, what made me a man united fan was when they won the treble back in the 90's.. :D
