Simply Put:

I like this guy and we were good friends before. He has a girlfriend but he doesn't seem happy. Any suggestions for a course of action?

dont decide for him, let him want the feeling, let it be natural, you would really sound desperate if you judge their relationship according to your point of view, their is no way you would know that he is unhappy right now, if you really love him show respect, be there for him when he needs you. let him realize for himself is he indeeds needs you more in his life, be a friend first

Well this is tricky. You could ask him in a friendly way is he happy in his relationship. Or you can ask him if his g.f and him thought about seeing other people. You can start to be more available to him. Maybe you should just be a friend for now and wait and see what happens.

Don't bud into the relationship and become the "other girl" because that's just going to complicate things. This might seem bad, but just wait until he's completely done with the other girl. Then you can be with him because well, he'll be actually available!

Approach him about it. He is a human being just like you are. Point out what you think about his unhappiness to him and open up to him, tell him that if she doesnt like him and hes not happy, then maybe he should try spending some time with you

Let him confide in you if needs to, but don't do anything else until they break up on their own. If you help them break up, then that will always hang over your head and may even ruin your relationship (if you got into one with him) with this guy. Any time he was unhappy there'd be the chance of him talking to somebody else. Let nature take it's course.
