They're written that way so that when it comes up behind a car and the driver looks in his mirror he'll see the word correctly, and understand that an ambulance is attempting to get past him. If they write it normally then a driver looking at it in his mirror would see it backwards and might not realize, as quickly, what it was.

I do saw other vans, company name, do that too. So the driver of the front know who is behind.
