Cichlids : More severums; If you have the tank space, severums get along with other severums tolerably, expect some fighting, and even targeted bullying. I had one female gold that pestered my green male until he got big enough to fight back, he finally beat her and became beta fish in the tank. She immediately zeroed in on a smaller gold male, until I sold her. In my experience, the females are more inclined to bully smaller fish than the males.

Convivt Chilchids:I've only had them a short while and so far they're great. They don't get real big, 4-6 inches for males, under 4 inches for females, they're tough as nails, they like most any water, they'll eat anything and like it, they're fairly handsome fish, and they don't cost much. They have all the prerequisites for being the perfect target fish, and they help the pleco gobble up uneaten food. My male is 2 1/2 inches, the female 2 inches, they set up house in a coconut shell the second day in the tank. I now have baby convicts grazing on the gravel, with harried parents dashing around. I expect that my severums will be hunting baby convicts when they get away from the scrappy parents, so this prolific breeder even provides feeder fish! The Honeymoon with this interesting little fish isn't over yet, but so far I highly recommend them.

African cichlids: I'd avoid these, for starters most are from the rift lakes and like much harder water than severums, and differ in body language, causing confusion and increased fighting from mixed messages. Humans tend to shout, gesture allot, and become angry when dealing with someone who speaks a different language, fish aren't much different. Some of the west African species like soft water, such as Jewel cichlids, but may be hostile, and they "don'ta speaka da language".

South American cichlids: Most like the same water, I'll break them down farther.
Oscars(Astronotus ocellatus); These fish do well together, I've not kept them, but I see and hear about them together all the time. Oscars, being even bigger than severums, need even more tank space, and create even more bioload on a system. Frankly, severums are more likely to be target fish for oscars, than the other way around.

Central American Cichlids; This group generally likes harder water, but "speak" the same body language, so if a compromise on the water can be found, they should work out. I'd avoid the "Guapotes", most of these bruisers are too big and ornery for severums

Cycle the 55gal tank first. this can take between a million and a couple of weeks. presented the fish are all small: Then introduce 0.5 the fish. Wait 2 weeks. Then introduce the last fish. in the journey that they are tremendous - in hardship-free words a million or 2 at a time with 2 weeks inbetween each and each intro..

You'd probably be RIGHT ON if you put water in it with the fish. I'd also ad a little bit of chlorine additive to keep it from getting mildew.

Glad I Could Help.
