try to get him into a higher placed class, maybe a upper level book club with some of the other students that may be ready for it. Or give him something fun to do when hes done with the work, also see if there is a way to get him harder work ( maybe from the next grade level or ahead in the year). If its Motivation and doing homework then do what my mom did, take away video games and tv for weekdays. Possibly he may have some illness, something to do with restfulness

He's in the first grade! A certain amount of messing around is--like it or not--age appropriate. If he is able to focus and attend to tasks at home without wandering around, it's probably not him, but the teaching or the setting. You need to figure out why he is inattentive with these tasks in this setting. It may be boring, it may be he is distracted by too much going on around him, he may not like school, or a dozen other things. Spend a day at school with him. No one knows your child as well as you do, and the tone you help set early on will follow him through many years of education. So show him how much you value school by attending with him, at least for a day while you further analyze the situation.

Just be thankful your son's teacher does not pinch him for messing around! My son's first grade teacher did this to him and he is also bored. Maybe the teacher isn't experienced enough to know that the first grade is so crucial in their learning; they need to be challenged, they absorb so much that we don't realize. I say speak with the principal about the teacher's strategies and suggest she challenge the class more, at least your son and others who might be ranked higher.

LOL!! that was me in school!! I almost flunked out because i didnt do anything in any classes.. starting at a young age. After many bad grades and many tests, they finally learned what I told them all along. I was BORED!! They put me in high school classes when I was in middle school. They put me in classes I liked (science and math) and I excelled. If I was interested, I payed attention. Get your son tested on more advanced things in class..

Have him tested for his abilities, he may not understand the work and is getting frustrated, this happened with my son and we found out he is dyslexic, now he is on track with his work and passing some of the kids in his class!

Well for homework my mom use to give me prizes afterwords, like lets say math for example, quiz him and if he gets the answers right give him a treat, piece of candy or something like that, or dont let him have fun like playing video games or playing with toy till he finishes his homework, dont give in until he is completely finished, or their would be consequences of no play time.
Thats why my mom did and it worked [:
